The reason why I have decided to include a section on emotional intelligence is because our emotions are the primary driving force behind motivation.

Emotions are the fuel that drives our actions. Without emotions, there would be no employee, team or self motivation.

To fully understand how our thoughts and emotions impact our behavior, read this article.

So you can just imagine how important it is to manage emotions if you want to build and sustain employee motivation. Building emotional intelligence is the way we are going to do just that

So where do we start? Maybe the beginning is not a bad idea.

What is Emotional Intelligence?

Emotional intelligence (Also known as EQ) refer to your ability to effectively manage yourself and your relationships, like your relationships with your employees

EQ became a popular way to measure top performers during the past 10 to 15 years.

Previously people’s intelligence was only measured by there IQ (Intelligence Quotient). Employees were hired on their cognitive or technical skills and very few people measured new employees on their ability to interact with other people.

A couple of years ago another form of intelligence has emerged as essential to success in work and life – emotional intelligence.

Daniel Coleman, a key thinker and researcher in the field, has suggested that with regards to excellent job performance, EQ has been shown to be twice as important as cognitive ability and technical skills.

This doesn’t mean that IQ isn’t important. But it seems to be more of an entry level requirement.

The good news is that while your IQ is fixed and you can’t seem to change it, you can develop and grow your EQ.

In the meantime other intelligences have emerged as well. People are now starting to talk about SQ (Spiritual Intelligence), PQ (Physical Intelligence) and all kinds of other Q’s. These other Q’s or intelligences are only in its formative stages as concepts, so I don’t want to spend too much time on it. For now, we will only focus on EQ.

All right, before you get totally confused and Q’ed up, lets look at EQ.

The Five Pillars of EQ

Yes, me and my pillars again.

When we talk about EQ, we are basically talking about five pillars. These pillars are divided in Intrapersonal (with ourselves) and Interpersonal (with others) sections. Emotional Intelligent people rate high in each of these areas:

Intrapersonal (with ourselves) Interpersonal (with others)

EQ is something that can be trained. It is a bit it like a muscle. If you train it daily, it become strong and durable.

If you work at it daily, you build that EQ muscle, to a point where it will become second nature to you.

The purpose of this part of the site is to train that EQ muscle. If you use these tools on a regular basis, it will grow and develop that EQ muscle over time.

If you want me to help you with the EQ Development of your employees, read more about my Emotional Intelligence Program, Growing the EQ Muscle Together here .
