When was the last time you really appreciated something...really felt gratitude for something in your life that’s not new?

I have found that stressful people tend to focus a lot on what they don’t have and take what they have for granted.

This is normal, because we aspire to get new things and we look forward to new exciting events in our lives.

Gratitude is one of the keys to living in the moment...to live now...to really be alive. It’s a great stress reliever.

The Good Old Days

We all have situations or times in our lives that we think about with fond memories. We always refer to those times as “the good old days”. As you get older, these “good old days” becomes more and more.

The good thing about that is that we tend to only remember the good things about those circumstances. We seem to forget the bad about it.

What I have found in my life is that when I reflect back on how I experienced those “good old days”, I didn’t seem to appreciate it as much at the time. I took it for granted. My mind was focused on what I still want to do, become or have.

This is where the lesson is to me. I am sure there are things about our current reality that we will long back to in a couple of years. Maybe it’s our youth, maybe it’s our children that are still at home or maybe it is just a mother or father that are still alive. The fact of the matter is that we didn’t appreciate the good old times as we should when we were there. We shouldn’t make the same mistake now.

Gratitude is one of the keys to being aware. It will put you in a positive frame of mind and because you are thinking about something positive, you will have positive emotions and vibrational energy.

People naturally tend to focus on what they don’t have, so to appreciate the things you have should be a conscious choice. Do the following this week:

  1. Every morning, before you start your day, consciously choose something that you take for granted; something that you are thankful for, and reflect on it a bit. Keep it as something to “flip switch” to every time you feel a negative emotion.
  2. If there are things that you can see or touch, like your car or your body...think about how great it is to have it every time you use it.
  3. Think about the people in your life that you take for granted, especially your parents, call them today or pay them a visit. We tend to only appreciate people fully when they are not there anymore.

Gratitude is about seeing the glass of your life as being half full instead of half empty. It’s about having the “good old days” now. It’s about focusing on your “haves” and not to be preoccupied with your “not haves”
