The Law of Attraction

The Law of Attraction was a topic of hot debate in the last couple of years.

Some people believe it passionately. Others think it’s a lot of crap. The DVD of The Secret has probably done more than anything else to put the Law of Attraction on the map.

I’ve done a bit of reading about it and also put some of it to the test. The most valuable information I found on Steve Pavlina’s blog. Lynn Grabhorn also gave some brilliant insights in her book, “Excuse me, your life is waiting”, while Esther and Jerry Hicks gave it more of a spiritual perspective in The Law of Attraction.

A relative spoke to me the other day and she mentioned that she was very excited when she first learned about the “Law of Attraction”.

That was until she realized that there is no scientific proof that such a law exist.

Now, first of all, the “Law of Attraction” shouldn’t be viewed as a scientific law - like Newton’s laws. How do you proof such a thing scientifically? How do you measure people’s energy, intentions and emotions?

I am no scientist, but I suspect that it would be very difficult. So first and foremost, you need to forget about thinking about the “Law of Attraction” as a scientifically proven law. The only thing I know is that there is a strong link to the recent discoveries in neuroscience and the “Law of Attraction”

For those of you who don’t know, the Law of attraction basically says: "You are like a magnet, attracting unto you the essence of that which you are thinking and feeling." So, if you are feeling fat, you cannot attract thin. If you feel poor, you cannot attract prosperity, and so on.

That’s why the book of “The Secret” put so much emphasis on gratitude. With gratitude, you focus on what you have, and therefore, you attract more of it. If you focus on your lack of whatever you want, you will attract more of it as well.

This made perfect sense to me, as I focused my whole life on the lack of things that I wanted, and that’s exactly what I’ve got. It’s only a couple of years ago that I started focusing on what I want and the things that I am thankful for, and the results are amazing.

To come back to the link with neuroscience, recent discoveries in neuroscience found that we shouldn’t try to change old, unwanted habits. We should rather leave them right where they are and focus on creating new ones.

In other words, do not focus on the habits that you don’t want. Focus on creating new habits that are in line with what you do want. Now there’s a bit of science for you, although I wouldn’t use it to prove the “Law of Attraction” in a scientific context.

Put Energy and Feeling Behind an Intention or Goal

This is the most important thing to understand in using the “Law of Attraction”. Lyn Grabhorn put a lot of emphasis on this and Steve Pavlina explains it beautifully on his blog.

It is your vibrational energy behind a thought that attracts. The thought in itself without any energy won’t achieve a lot. If you feel good about a thought, it means that your vibrational energy is attracting that thought. It’s important to keep in mind that it’s not so much your feelings that attracts, it’s your vibrational energy.

Your feelings are a result of the positive high vibrational energy that you are sending out.

So the first step is to put a thought behind an intention, then you need to feel it, to make sure that your energy is sending out the right vibrations. Your feelings are the best measure you have to know whether you are sending out the right vibrations.

It’s not possible to use the “Law of Attraction” consciously if you are not emotionally aware. You will need to train yourself to become emotionally aware if you want to make it a habit. Use your Emotional Guidance System to tell you whether you are putting the right energy behind a thought.

Wants and Don’t Wants

Take a single day and monitor your thoughts. Catch yourself every time you are thinking about something you don’t want. I’ve tried it some time last year and was amazed at how many times a day I think of what I don’t want, and I've always pride myself on being a very positive person.

However, this is a good place to start, because if you know what you don’t want, you can redirect your thoughts and vibration to what you want. Some of the don’t wants that I focused on was:

I don’t want any bills

I don’t want to sit in traffic

I don’t want to be overweight

I don’t want it to be so hot. Etc, etc, etc.

The more I gave thought attention to these things, the more of it I got. So, once you have identified what you “don’t want”, decide what you “do want”. Now this can be quite tricky, because you can very easy give attention to a “don’t want” in a “want”. Let me explain to you.

I want my mailbox to be without any bills

I want to avoid traffic

I want to lose weight

I want it to be not so hot

Although, this is what I want, I still focused on my LACK of what I want. The bills, traffic, weight, and weather is still getting attention from me.

Real “wants” that would make me feel good and sending out the right energy would be this:

I want to be financially free

I want to enjoy every minute of my day

I want to be a healthy person

I want to enjoy the weather

Now I focus on real “wants”, and I am not giving my “don’t wants” any attention...and the Law of Attraction understand that language.

Use your Emotional Guidance System

How do you monitor your thoughts? You don’t. Rather monitor your emotions. When you are feeling a negative emotion, check your thinking and you will see that you are giving energy to a “don’t want”. Then you can consciously focus your energy on what you want...then you are using the Law of Attraction

Remember, your thoughts are within your control and your emotions will tell you when you need to change it. Lyn Grabhorn writes that our most important job in using the “Law of Attraction” is to “feel good”. Once you start to recognize the “don’t want” thoughts, STOP GIVING IT ATTENTION…ANY ATTENTION.

Get a Flip Switch

Lyn Grabhorn also writes about a tool that I’ve used with very good results. Remember, with the Law of Attraction we want to give attention to the things we want. The things that gives us that positive emotional vibration.

When you wake up every morning, get yourself a topic that will make you feel good. Anything. It might be your beautiful home, or your upcoming vacation, or your beautiful blue eyes or anything that makes you “feel good”.

Then whenever you experience a negative emotion, you “flip switch” to that thought. Remember, your thoughts are the only thing you have total control over.

Choose a different topic everyday, and stick to it. Don’t change it halfway through the day. That way you will have a positive thought ready whenever you experience that negative emotions.

Somebody once said that if you think you are happy then you are happy. This is the Law of Attraction in action.
