Trust: "If you knew this about me..."

Sometimes also called "The Six Minute Exercise". This is a powerful activity where people actually take the risk of talking about themselves about issues that they would normally only disclose to people that they trust. Each team member get 6 minutes to answer the following statement: "If you knew this about me, you would better understand me as a member of this team..."

Problem Solving: The Box Exercise

Also called "Talking behind my back". The power in this team building activity is in the fact that people give their challenges and problems to other team members to brainstorm. They then just sit back and listen how the others brainstorm their challenges. The real strength of this activity is not so much in solving the problems (although it happens most of the time). It is in the fact that people build an understanding and empathy for other people’s problems and challenges.

It is very useful to brake down silos within a team.

Listening: Reflective listening

AKA "Listening to Understand". This exercise helps people to communicate from a position of empathy and not "trying to be right" It is a great tool to use with conflict management.

This activity, when it becomes a habit, has the ability to combat office politics. Behind every complaint there is a request and this activity get people to focus on just that.

Appreciation: Strength Acknowledgment

This is one of the most powerful team building activities. People acknowledge each other honestly for their strengths and for what they bring to the team. They say that the average human being give and receive 27 negative comments for every positive comment. And the workplace is no exception. Many things have been written about positive affirmations. This is the same, except they do it to one another…in their faces.
